Jouri is still very tired. Hospital visits follow one after another while waiting to be able to fund an intervention.
This is the distress call we received from a mother fighting alone for her daughter's future, compromised by a disease taking up more and more space in their lives.
"Hello Madam, I am an Algerian mother. I have a daughter who suffers from thalassemia. She needs a bone marrow transplant, but the costs are high and I am deeply saddened by my daughter's condition. I see her slipping away. I am helpless, please help me"
We immediately contacted a facility with which we have already worked on this type of pathology, namely: Major Thalassemia.
A slowly progressing disease that causes irreversible damage and, in the most complex cases, the child's death.
In many cases, the spleen is removed; Jouri has stage 1 splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen).
She lives between her home and the hospital caring for her, as she requires packed red blood cells or blood bags on a very regular basis.
Her thalassemia is characterized by anemia (a lack of red blood cells and hemoglobin). This results in paleness, extreme fatigue, as well as dizziness and shortness of breath. At 3 years old, Jouri is already very weak, and her mother feels helpless during every crisis episode.
My cousins visited me this morning to go play in the park in the afternoon 🏡. But I had to leave early to undergo yet another transfusion that left me bedridden until evening 😢.
I am waiting for your warm encouragement, your messages, and your donations.
In Constantine, Algeria, where the mother lives, she finds support from her friends and neighbors, but she feels overwhelmed by all the tests that are scheduled closer and closer together, and the endless, very long, and complex transfusions. Those who undergo them know the complexity of the procedure and the constant monitoring required during these treatments that they cannot avoid. ....and it is very long....!
Without these transfusions, Jouri is exhausted, anemic from iron deficiency, and breathless from the lack of hemoglobin in her blood. Jouri is transfusion-dependent.
To date, an HSC (hematopoietic stem cell) transplant is the only curative therapeutic option.
However, this cannot be performed in Algeria and, moreover, represents a high cost for the family.
If we succeed, Jouri will be transferred to Istanbul at Acibadem, to finally receive her treatment, where her mother will accompany her.
We thank everyone who extends a helping hand as best they can to Jouri.
We will keep you informed of our little protégé's progress in the news section and on our Facebook page.
