His body produces almost no hemoglobin, the essential protein that carries oxygen. As a result, he is constantly exhausted, quickly gets short of breath, often suffers from pain, and cannot attend school regularly or play soccer — his favorite sport.
To survive, he must receive blood transfusions on a very regular basis, sometimes several times a month. Each transfusion lasts for hours; he spends entire days at the hospital.
Yet these transfusions, essential to keep him alive, also cause an iron overload in his body, which gradually damages his vital organs: his heart, liver, and spleen. His spleen is already affected, and every passing day without a transplant worsens the situation.
Without a bone marrow transplant, the only path to a cure, he has no future. And as time goes on, the chances of success for this transplant diminish… If he does not receive the surgery in time, his condition may deteriorate to the point of becoming irreversible. This illness, silent yet cruel, can be fatal.
His parents are exhausted and desperate, yet brave. With an average salary of 250 euros per month, they cannot cover the cost of medications, travel, or save up for an operation abroad. Because bone marrow transplants are not performed in Algeria.
