At only 2 years old, Adem is already familiar with hospital stays, transfusions, and pain. This little Algerian boy suffers from beta-thalassemia major, a blood disorder diagnosed in the first months of his life.
Today, his abdomen is severely swollen. Medical examinations describe a significant accumulation of fluid in his abdomen, known as ascites, as well as portal hypertension: abnormally high blood pressure in the vessels carrying blood to the liver.
Adem is suffering immensely. His enlarged abdomen and his condition make daily life very difficult. His medical report also describes difficulties in standing and walking, linked to a severely enlarged spleen and severe chronic anemia.
