The management of clubfoot (talipes equinovarus) is essential and must intervene as early as possible after birth. The globally recognized reference method is the Ponseti method.
This approach begins with a series of gentle manipulations, performed by a specialized healthcare professional, to progressively correct the foot's position. After each manipulation, a cast (resin or traditional plaster) is applied. It generally extends from the thigh to the toes and aims to maintain the correction achieved.
The cast change rhythm is regular, often weekly for several weeks. With each new application, the foot is corrected a little more, step by step.
In some cases, a small surgical procedure on the Achilles tendon may be necessary to facilitate its lengthening and optimize the correction. This percutaneous tenotomy is a simple and quick procedure.
Once the initial correction is achieved, a crucial maintenance phase begins. The child wears a specific brace, consisting of shoes connected by a bar. This device is essential to stabilize the result and prevent any recurrence of the deformity.
Thanks to early and rigorous management, the results of the Ponseti method are excellent, offering the child very good prospects for their motor development and quality of life.
